This collection of 10- to 15- km trails takes you across a slice of the cultural hotspots of South Wayanad, the genteel much settled part of the district.

The trails will be over shimmering green landscapes, with one trail leading to the vast blue sheets of water at the Karapuzha lake.

The rides will stop at the many points of interests along the way, small but famous temples, an NGO that supports hundreds of local women with livelihood, a bio diversity research station, a tribal hamlet.

There will be ample scope for local interaction and to tuck into local delicacies on the way.

This program will last an easy half day and loops from the Muddyboots office near Kalpetta.

This trail can be tailored to moderate difficulty depending on start and end points.

Drive over to North Wayanad to one of the little towns in the morning. Pedal down the smooth tarmac through dense forest lands. You will be crossing three different wildlife sanctuaries by the end of the ride.

The undulating terrain poses an occasional challenge, but one cannot linger on the wayside, this area being one of the more frequented elephant corridors.

The road trail ends and turns into a mud and gravel track that skirts ancient paddy fields to the broad river. Push the bikes onto a large bamboo raft or country boat based on the trail.

Once across the river, the hard packed mud trail enters a patch of deciduous forests, again with a constant menace of elephant herds. Head out with relief onto tarmac again.

Ride the backcountry roads till you cross a twin bridge, and then turn into a sandy trail along the broken river bank. Enjoy this last but most enjoyable challenge of the day, for by the end of this stretch you will reach your vehicles.

Ride over to a nearby local eatery that serves one of the best meals you will have in your life. Gorge yourself on a full spread Kerala ela-sadya. And then roll into your vehicle to doze off during your drive back.

This trail can be extended to a two day expedition, linking to the Caves Of Nirvana.

You will test your mettle against the unforgiving slopes of a legendary hill today.You will drive to the trail head where a famous temple is situated in a scenic valley in South Coorg.

The stream nearby is associated with  legends from the Ramayana. And the mountain is associated with the creator himself, and there is a peak close by that is named after the undisputed king of the wilderness himself.

The trail will ascend steadily through the tree line along the rushing stream. After a long arduous climb you you will be amply rewarded with the spectacular scenery unfolding below you at the grasslands.

By noon you will mount the slopes and reach the edge of the high rolling plateau. Take a break and lots of photographs.

The trail will now follow the crests and troughs of the plateau and heads towards the massive summit that rears its head out of the flatlands.

Take stock before you attempt the steep climb that shoots straight up the shoulder to the summit offering 360degree views. Enjoy the stiff breeze and the views of Coorg, Kerala, coffee plantations, dense forests and grasslands spread out beneath your feet.

The descend will get you to the trail head by late evening. Take a dip in the river on the way and freshen up, settle into your vehicle and take a nap till your resort.

This trail can be tailored to a moderate family friendly hike, returning after a stream bath, or can be extended to a long and hard hike across mixed terrain.

The morning drive will take you to a small plantation town in the foothills of the Chembra ranges. You will drive beyond the town on the smooth road winding through teagardens to the trailhead.

The hike launches you into a tea garden clinging to the gentle slopes of the foothills with a massive summit high above.

After a steady climb interrupted by crossing over a rushing mountains stream, and passing plantation settlements, you will climb to a road that reaches a gatepost at the treeline.

The trail enters the shade of the forest canopy – the cardamom forests retain the massive old trees and the canopy is intact. The trail reduces to a four-wheel mud trail.

You will cut across a meadow to reach the stream again. The ice cold water joyously tumble between huge black boulders. The looks can be deceptive – this joyous stream transforms to terrifying whitewater in Monsoons.

You will stop by a wide bank on the stream for lunch. After lunch and crisscrossing the stream, or diving into it to relax, you will climb hard out of the treeline into grasslands to a vista point.

Descend from the vista point though the plantation roads till you reach back at the gatepost where you will board you vehicle and head back to your accommodations.

This day-trail is highly recommended for families with children and for small groups, with an additional option for a traditional Kerala lunch.

Drive over to the enchanting teagardens of Pozhuthana, some of which are the oldest plantations in Wayanad, and squeezed between mist clad mountains, miles of tea carpeted slopes and a winding river.

The day will start with a hike into the forests, heading towards a mountain stream. There are many irresistible swimming holes that one can spend time at.

In the afternoon you will get onto the cycles and pedal down one of the many scenic trails either on smooth roads or mixing roads with mud trails based on your fitness and preference.

At the end of the cycling reach the river, where bamboo rafts will await you with river guides and life jackets. Get midstream and pole, row, swim or wade your way to the landing point.

Depart by evening after a hot tea from a local tea shop and head back to your accommodations. 

This short activity can be combined with biking and hiking for a half- or all- day adventure at Adventure Zone Pozhuthana

Drive over to the the enchanting tea gardens of Pozhuthana, some of which are the oldest plantations in Wayanad, and situated at the foot of an array of mist-clad mountains.

Park your vehicle on the shoulder at Peringoda. You can either get dropped back after the ride or instruct your driver to come over to the landing point downriver.

Walk over a grassy meadow to a mud trail leading to the rafting point at a bend in the Vythiri river. Wear your life jackets – while the river is shallow much of the way there are occasional deeps that can swallow a ship.

Your river guide will pole the raft midstream and you will float down the winding green river between thick forests of bamboo and rushes, and tea or coffee estates.

Watch out for the myriad bird and insect life on the banks, including the famous Malabar Hornbill. You can stop at the tribal deity on the river bank, and splash into the water at the shallow stretches.

The raft will land below the Anoth bridge 3kilometers downstream. Once you dry yourself, you can try the local tea shop to sample some hot tea and snacks.

Turn away from the main roads into back roads cutting across pretty countryside. Start the hike at a forest road snaking its way into dense forest lands.

This trail is the most enjoyable of all Muddyboots trails and can be lengthened or shortened based on fitness and time at hand, and can accommodate even very large groups.

Start the hike from a forest road bounding the ancient tribal lands. Cross vast paddy fields tended by the tribal peoples in the traditional ways.

Reach the banks of Kabini between forests of bamboo and old trees. Hike along the river bank to a raft ferry and cross the river to the main island.

Walk along the forest path downstream and leave civilization behind as the foliage closes in on the trail. The track twists and drops int rushing waters.

Step right in, and spend the next many hours crossing rivers and the wooded islands. The water will go from ankle deep to waist deep, glassy clear to frothing white, gentle glides to fierce torrents.

Leave your worries, and maybe your footwear on the land and enjoy the most wonderful time you will ever have in your life.

Be sure to ask your guide for all the tribal lore and myths surrounding these mysterious islands – with stories linking the Ramayana with spots around this area. As well as the history of the tribal peoples that inhabited this area for ages. If time allows visit the tribal deities in the nearby forest temple.

Return to land for a mouth watering elaborate traditional Kerala ‘ela sadya’ by mid-afternoon.
Collapse into your vehicle and snooze till you reach your accommodations.

This trail can be tailored to a moderate hike, albeit with a steep climb, by climbing to and returning from the first ridge.

Drive along a spectacular lake to reach the trail head. Head up the steep trail through tall trees till the grassland and mount a broad shoulder to a minor summit on the spine of the majestic mountain – named after a fabled demon – offering unmatched views of water, mountain and country.

After a halt at this viewpoint follow the ridge leading gently uphill, and then plunge into a valley towards a gushing stream at the bottom. Spend some time resting your tired limbs and then climb up to traverse across the slope till it slants down into another valley.

Hike down the incline into the tree line till the ever widening mountain stream acquiring volume and power. Head down along the water course, around and over boulders of all sizes and shapes.

Descend below a waterfall to a series of clear pools downstream. Plunge in to wash away your tiredness. Walk to your vehicle parked close by and drive by the lake and see if you can catch a boat ride among the islands enroute your accommodations.
